Breaking News | | Saturday, May 24th, 2008: Rodriguez Torches Pirates for 5 Hits 5 hits in 5 at-bats. It doesn't happen every day and when it does, it's exciting. Today Ivan Rodriguez of the Chicago White Sox had a sensational 5-5 game against Pittsburgh at U.S. Cellular Field. He rifled base hits all over the ballpark, but it didn't pay off in a victory. The Pirates took the game 10-3.
In the postgame press conference Rodriguez joked, "Heck, that's a week's worth of hitting for me and I did it all in one day. I guess I can take the rest of the week off... Right, Skip?" His manager retorted half-smilingly, "Only if we win the game, son... only if we win the ballgame. That's what they pay us to do, you know."
I. Rodriguez singled in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, singled in the 7th and hit an RBI single in the 8th.
This season Rodriguez is hitting at a .248 pace with 6 home runs, 18 RBIs and has scored 14 times. | | Tuesday, May 6th, 2008: Philadelphia's Washburn Stands out in Shutout After his 2-0 shutout win against the Pirates, Jarrod Washburn said, "I went out there to try and eat up innings and help out our bullpen. I felt I had my good stuff... and it turned out my command was solid and my breaking balls were good."
They were better than good as the Phillies pitcher put up 5 strikeouts, surrendered 1 walk, allowed 2 hits and kept the bullpen phone quiet all day long.
In pitching stats this season Washburn has rung up 5 wins and no losses in 5 games. He has an ERA of 2.39 and has fanned 18 batters in 37.2 innings. | | Saturday, April 19th, 2008: Pirates SP Out The Pittsburgh Pirates will lose the services of starting pitcher Ian Snell after he sustained back spasms while throwing the ball in today's game against the Philadelphia Phillies. "I'll get through it," Snell said. "The key now is to stay positive." His trainer said he is expected to be sidelined for the next 5 weeks.
