Breaking News | | Monday, July 24th, 2006: Lester Shuts out Federals At Modesto Grounds today Tampa dropped a 6-0 decision to Jon Lester and the Modesto Snarlers. The Federals offered little resistance to Lester, who stopped them on 5 hits, fanned 4 and walked 1.
To date this year in 23 starts, Lester has crafted a 12-5 mark with a 1.81 ERA. | | Saturday, July 1st, 2006: Bonser Acclaimed Top Pitcher in June There's something about a young rookie winning the Sub League 1 Pitcher of the Month trophy that sends shock waves through the league. Such is the case with Boof Bonser, a 24-year-old starter for the Tampa Federals.
In June, he topped off the month with a 5-0 mark and 1.17 ERA in 5 starts, tossed 38.1 innings, fanned 28 and held opposing teams to a .184 average.
To date Bonser is 9-3 in 17 starts with a 2.34 ERA and has 86 strikeouts in 115.1 innings. | | Thursday, April 6th, 2006: League Suspends Unknown The Tampa Federals were not very happy with the home plate umpire in today's 2-0 loss to Rochester at Tampa Fields. One in particular -- Joe Unknown. Upon being called out on strikes, the Federals center fielder gave the ump quite an earful. For that, the man in blue gave him the thumb and sent him to an early shower.
But the disgruntled Unknown lingered on the field for another five minutes berating the umpire. Finally his manager got him off the field and into the clubhouse.
But it got worse after the game, when Unknown told reporters, "He was blind today. They played 'Three Blind Mice' for him. If he doesn't know the words to the song, I'm sure we can get it in braille, so he can follow along."
For all of his escapades and after-the-game oration, the league office suspended Unknown for 2 games.
