Breaking News | | Wednesday, May 28th, 2008: Guthrie Tosses Shutout Against Boston Oakland starter Jeremy Guthrie really did a number on the Red Sox today, shutting them out 3-0 on 4 hits in a complete game victory. He issued no walks and had 4 strikeouts.
In his postgame comments, the Boston manager said, "We didn't have good at-bats. I don't make excuses, but when we were playing the game, our energy didn't show. That comes from either extremely good pitching or extremely lousy hitting... seeing as our team has a bunch of pretty good hitters, I have to tip my cap to Jeremy... he did an outstanding job today."
This season Guthrie has worked 34.2 innings with 20 strikeouts en route to a 3-2 record and a 2.60 ERA. | | Sunday, May 18th, 2008: Athletics Swisher Sidelined The Athletics received bad news this morning. Nick Swisher will miss 2-3 months due to a torn calf muscle. In the Oakland-Texas game he sustained the injury while running the bases. "I'm disappointed more than anything," he told reporters later in the day. "You can't help your team on the bench," Swisher sighed. "I'll do the rehab work and hope for a quick recovery."
Swisher is batting .270 in 2008 with 4 home runs, 11 RBIs and 25 runs scored. He has 34 hits in 126 at-bats. | | Saturday, May 17th, 2008: Blanton Sidelined for 1-2 Weeks Joe Blanton at first refused to leave today's Texas-Oakland game after he suffered back spasms while throwing a pitch. But his manager convinced him not to be foolish. "I want to be on the field," the feisty Oakland starting pitcher said. "I'll play through just about anything." Given time to reflect on the situation, he knew it was in his best interest to get immediate treatment. The injury is expected to keep Blanton out of action for 1-2 weeks.
In 9 starts this season Blanton has fashioned a 3-1 record and a 3.25 ERA. | | Injuries | Player | Injury | Out for... | Disabled List Status | RF Nick Swisher | torn calf muscle | 2 months | 47 day(s) left (60-day DL) | | Team Information | Record overall | 35-16, .686 PCT | Position in Division | 1st, - GB | Record at home | 19-10, .655 PCT | Record on the road | 16-6, .727 PCT | Record in X-inning games | 3-1, .750 PCT | Record in one-run games | 9-7, .563 PCT | Record versus LHP | 13-2, .867 PCT | Record versus RHP | 22-14, .611 PCT | Record last 10 games | 5-5, .500 PCT | Record in April | 18-5, .783 PCT | Record in May | 17-11, .607 PCT |
