Monaco Recap

The famed Circuit de Monaco played host to the fourth round of the 2016-17 SBMRL calendar.  Would the Stig be able to come away with a repeat victory or would Nero follow in his footsteps with a second pole to victory performance?  With three races in the books, here is how the cars lined up on the grid:

P1 – Nero (Ryan)
P2 – Jamonito del Verde (Jason)
P3 – The Stig (Jason)
P4 – Danger Wheel (Kim)
P5 – Captain Slow (Jason)
P6 – Ice (Frank)
P7 –  Mater (Ryan)
P8 – Launch Bornado (Barbara)
P9 – Jaap Snellrijder (Frank)
P10 – Jaronimus Maximus (Frank)

The start of the race featured a stall by the Stig with the immediate effect of impeding his teammate who started in the grid slot directly behind him.  While Nero and Jamonito found their way through Sainte Devote relatively quickly, the rest of the field piled into the corner behind them, running three wide and up to three deep, it was a miracle that no one collided.

Such tight racing would be a hallmark of the early portion of the race.  The chaos of the pack made it possible for every car except Mater to find themselves in the top four at some point in the first few corners.  Launch and Danger Wheel joined Nero at the front from the Loews hairpin through the tunnel, and Jamonito was also in the mix.  The only position that really solidified itself over the second sector was Ice’s ignominous hold on last place.

Jaronimus and Jaap had both come from the back row to 3rd and 4th, respectively, but both were also back in 9th place as the cars moved through the third sector.  Despite all the shifting positions, or perhaps because of them, all the cars were still tightly packed heading into the final two corners of the lap.  It was here that Jamonito found an edge.  He was able to find the perfect line through the Anthony Noghes corner, and then proceeded to dive for the pits and some fresh tyres.

The rest of the pack followed, with 5 cars tightly packed into the corner and Mater not far behind.  It was here that, for the first time this season, some cars chose to hurtle onward down the pit straight, skipping a chance for fresh tires.  While Launch, Captain Slow, and Mater all pitted, Jaap and Danger Wheel floored it in an effort to catch up with Jamonito.  Both cars passed the Osito driver in Sainte Devote.  Behind them, Ice split from Jaronimus and the Stig in a similar effort.  Unfortunately for Ice, while Nero, Jaronimus, the Stig, and Mater all found themselves held up by traffic in the pits, he was unable to find the pace to gain any advantage on them.

Jaap and Jamonito flew into the Casino section and took a small but significant lead on Danger Wheel.  It was an advantage that neither would cede, but between them, there were numerous lead changes over the remainder of the race.  Launch and Captain Slow, meanwhile, would spent the second sector hunting Danger Wheel down.  The first shift for that trio came in the Loews hairpin.  Captain Slow found himself forced to the slower, inside line.   Launch was able to take the tunnel straight while the Captain found himself living up to his moniker.

Launch’s speed was enough to draw even with Danger Wheel at the chicane.  The two charged forward waiting for a mistake by Jaap and Jamonito that wouldn’t come.  With Captain Slow in a solid 5th place, Jaronimus, Nero, the Stig, Ice, and Mater all fought in the trailing pack.  As Launch had with Danger Wheel, Jaronimus and the Stig caught up with Captain Slow at the chicane, but the Stig couldn’t quite keep up at Tabac.  He was soon caught up by Mater and the Cobalt cars.

As Jaap and Jamonito rounded Anthony Noghes with the finish line in sight, the biggest story of the race was beginning to unfold behind them.  The Stig, none too happy with getting passed by Nero and Mater charged a bit too forcefully thought ‘S’ de la Piscine.  He misjudged Mater’s speed and soon found himself crashed into the barrier and out of the race.

Shortly thereafter, Captain Slow went over some debris in Rascasse and lost his suspension, ending his race as well.  Jaap had the edge heading into the pit straight out of Anthony Noghes, but his engine simply wouldn’t respond.  Perhaps it was the strength of effort required to establish their lead, but Jamonito’s engine was equally powerless to gain any advantage, and when all was said and done, Jaap crossed first with Jamonito just milliseconds behind.

Danger Wheel and Launch Bornado were neck and neck heading for the finish line as well, but it was Danger Wheel’s engine that found the right note to take the final podium spot.  With both Scandinavian Blitz drivers now out of the race, Jaronimus took an uneventful 5th.  Ice had the edge on Mater and Nero for 6th coming through the final turn, but Mater’s engine was as equally strong as his teammate’s had been and he took it over the two Cobalt cars.  That left Ice and Nero in a drag race for 7th and 8th.  Unfortunately, Nero bumped Ice on the way and never fully made it.  In the grand scheme of things, it wasn’t a major blow to the team given that both positions were locked up, but treating the team’s hardware that recklessly will not go down well.

FINAL RESULTS

Driver Start Lap Finish
Jaap Snellrijder (RM) 9 2 1
Jamonito del Verde (ORC) 2 1 2
Danger Wheel (RB) 4 3 3
Launch Bornado (RM) 8 5 4
Jaronimus Maximus (ORC) 10 8 5
Mater (RB) 7 10 6
Ice (CO) 6 4 7
Nero (CO) 7 7 8, dnf
Captain Slow (SB) 5 6 9, dnf
The Stig (SB) 3 9 10, dnf

Jaap’s victory is his first of the season and his 3rd overall.  His starting position of 9th on the grid marks the lowest any victor has started from.  Jamonito’s 2nd place finish matches his finish in Austin as his best result and, despite the fact that Jaronimus is ahead of him in the standings, means he’s beaten his teammate in 3 of their 4 races.

Danger Wheel’s 3rd place finish is her best of the year, and ties Jamonito for 4th in the driver standings.  It’s also Danger Wheel’s first 3rd place finish.

Nero’s failure to complete the race means that he now has the negative distinction of finishing the fewest races, with 2 DNF’s this year and 2 last year.  Captain Slow and the Stig gave Scandinavian Blitz a double DNF for the second time.  The teammates suffered the same fate in the SBMRL’s inaugural race in Austin last season.  Interestingly, both races represent the only time either driver has failed to finish.

At the team level, Regency Motors tied Red Bull’s Austin result for the highest points total of the season.  However, Osito Racing Company’s strong showing means that Regency Motors haven’t pulled away significantly from their closest challenger.  At the other end of the Spectrum, Cobalt pulled up to a tie with Scandinavian Blitz for 4th place, but both teams are falling rather far behind.

Monaco Preview

Our visit to Monaco this year moves forward a month to December after last year’s race was held in January.  Cars will run along the picturesque Monte Carlo harbor and through some of the tightest street corners on the calendar.

Monaco

The starting grid takes up most of the pit straight and leads into an easy right hander before one of the longer straights of the course.  This leads to the forgiving Massenet corner followed by the second Casino corner.  Overall, the first sector is the easiest section of the track, but that also means that getting it wrong through here is simply unacceptable.

The second sector is highlighted by the Loews hairpin and the tunnel straight.  There are many ways to manage the hairpin and most of them are wrong.  The key to this part of the track is gathering enough speed for the tunnel, which represents the longest straight of the track.  Managing the hairpin is key to that approach.  The Tabac corner will slow the field down again but getting there involves properly navigating the chicane.  This is one of the last good spots for passing due to the technical nature of sector three.

The last sector doesn’t feature any long straights and will see the field slow down tremendously.  There will be a high potential for bumping here as the field gets compressed.  The Anthony Noghes corner, last on the track, finishes so close to the pit entry that cars with too much speed may have no option to get into the pits.  For cars that have had a good run through the first lap, that’s not an entirely bad option.

Last year’s race saw The Stig start from pole and lose that spot almost immediately.  That left Ice and Captain Slow battling for the lead most of the race, only to see The Stig come from behind and win it in the second half of lap 2.  Launch Bornado took 2nd and Ice was 3rd.  Jaap and Mater both opted to forego the pits, with Jaap able to use that tactic to pass 4 cars and ultimately finishing in 4th place.  Incidentally, Jaap’s drop from 3rd to 4th over the 2nd lap is, to date, the only time Jaap has lost position over the course of a lap.  As Monaco is the closest race to Italy this season, this will be Jaronimus’ home race.

Starting Grid

The starting grid sees Nero on pole for the second straight race this year.  Jamonito’s crash in Malaysia puts him second, while his teammate’s victory puts Jaronimus last on the grid.  Scandinavian Blitz will be looking for big points having both the Stig and Captain Slow in the top 5.  Regency Motors occupies two of the 3 bottom slots.

  1. Nero (CO)
  2. Jamonito del Verde (ORC)
  3. The Stig (SB)
  4. Danger Wheel (RB)
  5. Captain Slow (SB)
  6. Ice (CO)
  7. Mater (RB)
  8. Launch Bornado (RM)
  9. Jaap Snellrijder (RM)
  10. Jaronimus Maximus (ORC)

Pit selection is the reverse order of average starting position for each team’s cars.  Usually, that simply comes down to reverse order of team standings, but with the current tie at the top, it makes for a handy tie breaker between Osito Racing Company and Regency Motors.

  1. Regency Motors
  2. Osito Racing Company
  3. Red Bull
  4. Scandinavian Blitz
  5. Cobalt

Cobalt is in dire need of a strong result to avoid falling farther behind the other teams.  Regency Motors and Osito Racing Company will be vying to see who can take command of the team standings, with Jamonito poised near the front of the grid to aid in that quest.

Monaco Recap

A race through the streets of Monaco is always an adventure and the SBMRL’s fourth race of the season had plenty of ups and downs accordingly.  Before the race began, there were two notable announcements.  First, the White Team decided to officially rebrand themselves as Scandinavian Blitz, much to the delight of fans who found the previous name to be exceedingly bland.  Second, Ryan was unable to attend, so Jason and Frank took the reins for the Green Team.

The race began with a Scandinavian Blitz driver in pole position for the second time this year.  The Stig began in 2nd place in India but utimately finished in 7th.  Would he struggle again or be the third consecutive winner from pole?  Nero and Jaap were at the back of the pack for the second consecutive race with the rest of the field slotted in reverse order of the standings as usual.

P1 – The Stig (Jason)
P2 – Ice (Lonny)
P3 – Mater (Frank)
P4 – Captain Slow (Jason)
P5 – Launch Bornado (Barbara)
P6 – Danger Wheel (Jason)
P7 – Nero (Lonny)
P8 – Jaap Snellrijder (Frank)

The excitement began from the get go as the race got off to a grinding halt for Mater, who was the first driver to suffer a stall on race start.  His inability to get off the line forced Launch Bornado to the inside and a minor collision before Launch even crossed the starting line.  At the front, Ice managed to beat the Stig to the first corner while Captain Slow was similarly quick.

Monaco - Lap 1 Turn 1

Unlike previous races, where the first corner caused a decent amount of stratification between cars, Monaco saw two groups emerge with a 3 car leading pack and a 5 car trailer.  Mater was among the followers even in the back pack and his lack of pace would haunt him throughout the entire race.

The Mirabeau turn was where Captain Slow began to create some separation at the front.  Ice and the Stig found themselves struggling to keep up, with Danger Wheel and Launch Bornado suddenly hot on their heels.  The slowdown in the Loews hairpin gave a false sense of tightening of the cars at the lower speeds.

However, as cars began to come out of it, there was quite a bit of space that developed between them.  Separation would grow quickly as cars went from their lowest speeds of the track to their fastest through the tunnel.

Monaco - Lap 1 - Captain Slow with commanding lead

Captain Slow extended his lead by expertly navigating the Chicane and Bureau de Tabac.  He found himself well ahead of Ice, the Stig, and Danger Wheel, who represented the race for 2nd place.  The remaining four cars remained close until Mater found his engine wanting again.  He was unable to keep up with others and drifting off the pace in a lonely last place.

Monaco - Lap 1 View from Mater

As the first driver around the final turn, Captain Slow had done a fine job preserving his tires, but his high speed aggression left him needing gearbox maintenance and a trip to the pits.  It was here that things started to turn for a number of drivers.  While the good Captain was making his way towards Sainte Devote, Ice and Stig each went in for quick pit stops to replace tires.  They were both on their way quickly.  Danger Wheel also went to pit, but was blocked from leaving by the others, and so forced into a technical stop (see the pit rule comments for details).

Launch Bornado and Nero also went in for pit stops.  Nero being the only car to lose ground on entering as he didn’t carry enough pace out of the final turn.  Jaap, however, having been sparing on his first lap, opted not to pit.  His gambit suddenly found him surging past the others all the way into third place, behind Captain Slow and Ice.  The Stig and Danger Wheel were hot on his tail, and Launch Bornado was closing.  While Nero languished, Mater chose to follow Jaap’s lead and forego the pits in a desperate move to catch up.  Unfortunately, his car simply would not respond to his efforts and he was unable to use the front straight to catch even Nero.

Monaco - Pit row

At the front, Ice had taken a small lead over Captain Slow into Loews, but the big move was further back.  Launch Bornado charged hard into the Casino turns, passing Danger Wheel for 5th place.  Ice and Captain Slow couldn’t find their speed heading towards the tunnel, and suddenly the Stig and Jaap were right up there with them.  Only the Stig was able to find the right line through the Chicane, though, and like his teammate on the first lap, this was able to give him a fairly comfortable lead heading into the third sector.

Launch, meanwhile, absolutely screamed through the tunnel and was suddenly right in amongst Ice, Captain Slow, and Jaap.  As that group of four cars moved on to the marina district, Nero found his speed wanting while Mater suddenly found a bit of hope.  The two would battle to the end for the final two slots.

Monaco - Lap 2 Tunnel Straight

The Stig coolly navigated the third sector to take a bit of the drama out of the winner’s race, but behind him fierce battles raged.  Captain Slow had fallen off the pace at Bureau de Tabac, the very section of the track that saw him take a large lead during the first lap.  However, at various points in sector 3, Ice, Jaap, and Launch all found themselves leading the incredibly tight group of three cars vying for second.  First it was Ice in front, then Launch, then Jaap, then Ice again.  In the end, Launch carried the most speed through the final turn and was able to cruise down the front straight ahead of the other two.  Ice managed to pip Jaap for 3rd place.

Monaco - Lap 2 Race for 2nd

The back half of the drivers saw Captain Slow narrowly hang on to a 5th place finish ahead of Danger Wheel.  Mater, meanwhile, came from incredibly far back to edge ahead of Nero for 7th, thanks to a more aggressive line through the final two turns.

Final Results

Driver Start Lap Finish
The Stig (SB) 1 4 1
Launch Bornado (RM) 5 6 2
Ice (CO) 2 2 3

Captain Slow (SB) 4 1 5
Danger Wheel (GT) 6 5 6
Mater(GT) 3 8 7
Nero (CO) 7 7 8

The Stig became the third consecutive driver to win a race from pole position and that leaves Scandinavian Blitz as the only team to have won two races this year.  Those wins account for all of the team’s podium appearances.  As stated earlier, Mater became the first driver to stall on race start, a mistake from which he never recovered.  Jaap went from 8th to 4th place for the 3rd straight race.  Mater’s drop from 3rd to 7th ties the second worst showing after the Stig went from 2nd to 7th in India.  This leaves the Regency Motors drivers 1-2 in the standings, with 4 drivers all tied for 3rd place with 47 points each.

At the team level, Scandinavian Blitz’s performance sees them jump into second place, leapfrogging both Cobalt and the Green Team.
