Argentina Recap

The December race for SBMRL was hosted in Argentina, marking the second time that the SBMRL had visited the South American country. With Regency Motors having won each of the first four races of the season, the big question was who, if anyone, would be able to unseat them at the top of the podium.

The drivers lined up as follows:

P1 – Parker Lacroix (SB)
P2 – Orzo Albies (MnS)
P3 – Liu S. Amil X (FP)
P4 – Ramen Acuna Jr (MnS)
P5 – Felix (SM)
P6 – Mai “Cashew” Maghur (FP)
P7 – Max (SM)
P8 – Magnus Rasksen (SB)
P9 – Stoot van Vaart (RM)
P10 – Pieter Pieperpoes (RM)

For the first time in the season, we had an uneventful start. Every driver pulled away from the starting grid, although it was the drivers at opposite ends that had the best getaways. Parker was the first into Curva Numero Uno while Pieter was already passing others at the back.

Parker was able to leverage his pole position and smooth start to be among the leaders through the first sector. Orzo was his main challenger, eventually joining in a back and forth battle for the lead that would continue into the second sector. Liu dropped back into a battle with others behind them. That included a large group of cars represnting every team: Felix, Ramen, Magnus and Pieter among them.

Orzo leads Parker with Ramen in pursuit

The first driver to break from the pack and join the leaders was Orzo’s teammate Ramen, catching up to them by hitting the Curva de Ascari at speed. As they ploughed forward, nearly the rest of the entire field battled neck and neck through the same bend. Only Mai, who was struggling for pace was left out of the scrum.

The cars go two and three wide as they battle

The third sector on the first lap started proved tricky for some. The first big change actually came from Pieter, who found himself suddenly leading the race through the Senna S, a portion the track that scrambled the field. Orzo and Parker kept up with him, while behind them, Ramen bumped into Magnus. It wasn’t just the two of them that had issues, though. Max and Mai, who were fighting at the back of the field, also collided. Max came off worse for the wear, suffering severe body damage that knocked him out of the race completely.

Max is eliminated

Pieter, having pushed his car hard to get into the front running from a starting position at the back, went into the pits for fresh tires while Orzo and Parker stayed out. The result was that Parker established himself slightly ahead of the rest through the first sector. Ramen, Liu, and Magnus were the next group across the line, with Stoot, Felix, and Mai trailing.

The first sector of the second lap saw Parker maintain his lead. Liu was able to make it a pack of three challengers rather than two with a nifty move in the Curva de la Confiteria. Pieter was impacted by a minor collision with Orzo and began to fall slightly behind. Felix and Stoot were gradually falling further back, while Mai was suffering from a severe case of slowness. The Fir Splays driver seemingly unable to find any rhythm anywhere on the track.

Second lap action in the first sector

The next major event of the race took place when Parker was flying down the back straight and into the Curva de Ascari. Driving at maximum speed and ready to run away with things, Parker’s engine gave out.

Parker’s race comes to an end

It was a bitter disappointment for the driver who most needed a victory, particularly after running such a fine race to that point, hardly putting a foot wrong.

The lead of the race was inherited by Orzo, with Liu behind and a battle brewing between Ramen and Pieter. Mac ‘N Speed holding two of the top 4 cars at this point. The second sector saw Felix start to fade a bit, allowing Stoot and Magnus to begin fighting each other for 5th.

The final sector of the race would not be without event, either. Orzo led but Pieter and Ramen were hot on the heels of Liu.

The battle for 2nd heats up

Liu was able to leverage a bit of track position into the Senna S, forcing Pieter and Ramen to slow more than they would’ve liked. Meanwhile, Magnus was gaining a small advantage on Stoot in this challenging section.

With battles raging behind, Orzo cruised through what turned out to be an easy final sector and to his first win.

Orzo about to take the checkered flag

Unfortunately for Mac ‘N Speed, as Orzo was taking victory, Ramen was finding himself unable to complete the race. Battling Pieter for 3rd place, Ramen hit some road debris and a broken suspension left him unable to complete the final corner of the race.

Ramen eliminated while Pieter rolls on

The battle for third place left Liu all alone to take 2nd place. Ramen’s fate left Pieter no challenger for the final podium spot. Fourth place ended up being equally uneventful. Magnus took that position as Stoot found himself suddenly in a battle with Felix. It was one that Felix would win. That left just Mai, whose race can comfortably be described as disastrous.

Trailing by what seemed like miles, Mai decided to milk his time alone on the track, slowing down in the final straight, crossing the line as slowly as possible. SBMRL officials were not amused, leveraging a hefty fine against the driver and his team. Race victor Orzo had a different take, “I don’t know what the big deal is. I couldn’t tell any difference with what he did at the end and the rest of his race.”

Orzo is the first Mac ‘N Speed driver to take a victory and the win makes him the 17th different driver to win an SBMRL race. He led more of the race than any other driver, never giving up the lead after Parker’s elimination. It’s also Orzo’s first podium and he has now improved his finish position in every one of his races. The large points haul moves him up into 4th in the driver standings.

Liu’s second place is also his first podium. While Liu never led the race, he ran in the top 4 throughout almost the entire contest. His finish moves him up to 5th in the driver standings, behind Orzo. Pieter’s podium is his 3rd of the short season and stretches his lead over Stoot.

At a team lever, Pieter’s performance and the trio of DNF’s means that Regency Motors continues to hold a strong lead. The rest of the standings remain very tight even if Mac ‘N Speed and Fir Splays did cut into the lead a little bit. Mac ‘N Speed are now in 2nd place with Fir Splays just behind. Scandinavian Blitz and Switch Motorsports aren’t that far back, either. Only 9 points separates the four teams.

Estoril Recap

For the first time ever, the SBMRL took to Portugal and raced the Autódromo Fernanda Pires da Silva, or Estoril Circuit. The high speed track and the fact that it was new to all the teams kept anticipation for the race at a high. Once again, attention was pointed in the direction of Pieter Pieperpoes, coming off consecutive victories to open the season, but he would start the race from the back of the grid.

Here’s how the racers lined up:

P1 – Mai “Cashew” Maghur (FP)
P2 – Orzo Albies (MnS)
P3 – Felix (SM)
P4 – Parker Lacroix (SB)
P5 – Max (SM)
P6 – Liu S. Amil X (FP)
P7 – Ramen Acuna Jr (MnS)
P8 – Stoot van Vaart (RM)
P9 – Magnus Rasksen (SB)
P10 – Pieter Pieperpoes (RM)

When the lights went out, the field started to pull away. All except Ramen, who was unable to come off the line with speed and was soon surrounded by the back three on the grid. His teammate Orzo, however, was able to get things moving and the top three battled fiercely right from the get go. Liu also had a strong opening to the race, joining the lead group in the early running.

Through the second sector of the first lap, Mai gradually worked towards a bit of an edge over the rest of the field. Orzo, Felix, and Liu formed a group of challengers that were doing their best not to fall too far behind. A third pack containing Stoot, Parker, Max, and Pieter were jockeying for position in an effort to take advantage of any mistakes from those in front. Finally, Magnus and Ramen, who was really struggling to recover from the poor start, were hoping to find some rhythm that would let them salvage a very rough beginning.

The field gets spread out on Lap 1

The final sector of the first lap is where things started to shift significantly. The first thing to make note of is that none of those shifts affected Mai, who was looking in imperious form, comfortably taking each corner in stride. However, Turn 7 and the transition into the esses of Turn 8 started to catch some drivers out.

None of Orzo, Felix, or Liu were able to navigate the corners cleanly. This meant that the trailing pack and challenger pack suddenly merged. Instead of two groups of 3 and 4, respectively, it was a jumble of 7 cars all trying to get through tight corners simultaneously. The first casualty of the race proved to be Parker, whose effort to catch up overcooked his engine, forcing him to retire from the race.

Parker’s engine gave way around the outside of Turn 7

While Mai was comfortably heading round the parabolica and onto the pit straight, Stoot was a blur of orange through the Esses, coming out of them at high speed. Pieter, Max, Felix, and Orzo all came out strongly as well. While Mai bypassed the pits, Stoot dove for fresh rubber and was rewarded with an incredibly quick pit stop by his crew.

Pieter and Felix followed Mai’s strategy of staying on their existing set of tires, allowing them to stay fairly close with Stoot. Orzo and Ramen double stacked the Mac ‘N Speed pits and their pit crew was not up to the task. Liu, who had a rough go towards the end of the first lap, and Max both passed them, while Magnus reeled them in easily.

Mai in the lead with the back of the field all bunched up

While Mai continued to run smoothly, Stoot and Pieter were charging from behind. Max and Felix continued to push as well, ready to join in should anything go awry for the front runners.

Instead of making a mistake, though, the first big move came not because Mai faltered but because Stoot was able to find another gear. He flew down the straight between the 4th and 5th corners, catching up to Mai at the latter.

Stoot lunges down the inside of Turn 5

Joy on the Regency Motors pit wall would be short lived, however. Mai’s more measured approach meant that he was able to find his way cleanly into Turn 6, while Stoot’s driving proved erratic and he was unable to keep up. The falter gave Pieter a chance to catch up with him again while Mai seemingly was going to be out of reach.

A quick side note on the rest of the field, while the front three were now in serious competition, trading blows, the back groups were moving along consistently. Max and Felix held their own and while they weren’t catching up, the trailing four weren’t catching them either. Similar notes can be said for those at the back. They continued to jockey back and forth, unable to get an edge up on each other, but also unable to shake anyone.

It was as the leaders headed into Turn 7 that things started to shake up dramatically. First, Mai couldn’t find speed into the corner, allowing Stoot and Pieter an opening. Stoot took things smoothly, but Pieter’s worn rubber lost its grip causing him to spin out.

Pieter found himself facing the wrong way after a spin

At almost the same time, the trailing pack was charging through Turn 5 after the long straight. Magnus, pushing his engine hard down the straight and through the bend was soon bemoaning the same fate as his teammate. The engine would go no further and he was out.

Magnus is out while Switch Motorsports catch up to Pieter

Max and Felix found themselves suddenly trying to navigate around a very slow Pieter. By the time Pieter made his way into the Esses, he was also racing wheel to wheel with Orzo. The Mac ‘N Speed driver had gotten a leg up on Liu and Ramen in the third sector and now had visions for more.

At the front, Mai had to be far more cautious through the Esses than Stoot, seeing as he was still on his tires from the start of the race. Stoot was able to push his car for more, and was able to zoom past and across the finish line for his first career win.

Stoot finishes off a superb second lap for the victory

Mai kept up enough pace to keep ahead of Max and Felix, but the Switch Motorsports duo would not be denied a strong 3-4 finish, including their first podium of the season.

Meanwhile, with Orzo and Pieter in their battle for 5th place, well it turned out pretty similar to Stoot and Mai. This time it was Orzo with the extra speed down the straight and across the line, while Pieter had to recover just to beat out Ramen and Liu.

Orzo left Pieter, Ramen, and Liu to battle for the crumbs

Stoot’s victory gives him his first career win and 3rd podium of the short season. His ability to get a strong push down the pit straight on both laps gave him the ability to catch up to Mai and then pass him at the very end. The strong start to the season has him now up to second place in the driver standings, 3 points behind Pieter.

Mai’s second place is his first podium, and a much needed boost after failing to even finish in Austin. His dominance throughout the race makes the fact that he didn’t win slightly disappointing, but in the grand scheme of things it’s a very good result. Felix’s 3rd place has him finishing where he started, which is always a solid return when you start near the front. There weren’t too many missed opportunities, he just never found the little bit extra needed to get out front. Mai and Felix sharing the podium now also has them sharing a spot in the standings. They’re now tied for 5th place with 25 points each.

Stoot’s win continues Regency Motors’ dominance at the sharp end of the standings. Scandinavian Blitz’s double DNF put a real dent in their effort to keep pace. In turn, Switch Motorsports scored the second most points of the race and sit now just one point behind Scandinavian Blitz in 3rd place. Fir Splays also scored solid points, and now sit 4th. Mac ‘N Speed may be last in the standings, but there’s only 10 points between them and 2nd place. Additionally, they’re the only team that has improved their points haul in every race of the season so far.

Austin Recap

The SBMRL’s return to the track for the 2024-25 season saw a hugely successful race in Portland, Oregon to start the new season. The league headed south to Austin, Texas for the second race of the year. Would it be as hotly contested?

All eyes were on Pieter Pieperpoes after his come from behind victory in Portland, but he would be starting from the back of the grid in Austin. At the sharp end of the grid, Parker LaCroix would be looking to atone for a difficult first outing. Here’s how the entire grid stacked up:

P1 – Parker Lacroix (SB)
P2 – Orzo Albies (MnS)
P3 – Max (SM)
P4 – Mai “Cashew” Maghur (FP)
P5 – Felix (SM)
P6 – Ramen Acuna Jr (MnS)
P7 – Liu S. Amil X (FP)
P8 – Stoot van Vaart (RM)
P9 – Magnus Rasksen (SB)
P10 – Pieter Pieperpoes (RM)

Last time out in Portland, Max got off to a fast start and immediately rammed into Orzo. This time it was Stoot who got off to the hot start and it was Ramen who suffered for it. Despite all of that, the grid proceeded up the hill into the first corner mostly in the same order they started in. With Parker out front, the field bunched up behind him and Stoot was the first to make a big move, weaving through the field in Turn 2. Liu was the one who began an early challenge with Parker for the lead, however.

Liu just ahead of Parker with the rest of the field about as close as

With almost nothing separating the cars, there was plenty of opportunity for collisions. Both Mai and Liu suffered minor body damage that would leave debris on the track for others to deal with later. The bunching of the field also gave opportunities for wily drivers to find paths ahead of their opponents, something that Pieter took advantage of to move join the top half of runners.

Heading into the back straight, Parker was just ahead of Liu, with some surprising cars behind them. Not even halfway through the first lap, Magnus and Pieter, who had started 9th and 10th, were already running 3rd and 4th respectively. The cars from Switch Motorsports and Mac ‘N Speed were doing their best not to fall too far behind, as they were the bottom four.

Liu go the speed advantage on Parker down the back straight, flying through Turn 6 and then slamming on the brakes for the winding Turn 7. Pieter and Stoot, both of Regency Motors also found speed down the back straight. In his effort to keep up with the Regency Motors cars, however, Mai collided with Pieter and found himself out of the race.

Mai crashes out after colliding with Pieter

With nine cars remaining on track, the field ploughed into the 3rd sector where the field appeared to bunch up again. The reality matched appearances, which meant there were again chances for some moves to be made. Pieter’s strong first lap continued as he joined Liu and Parker in the lead group of cars. The middle group featured Max in the 4th place position. This was a positive turn of events from the Switch Motorsports driver, who had fallen all the way to last place after starting 3rd on the grid. In the back, Ramen was struggling to keep up.

Cars navigate the 3rd sector

The top three drivers all dove for the pits, feeling they needed fresh rubber after pushing their vehicles on the first lap. Magnus followed suit, but Stoot opted to charge ahead on his worn tires. Skipping the pits had worked a treat for him in Portland, but this time around he didn’t gain much of an advantage. Max and Ramen would also skip the pits in an effort to keep up with the others.

Pieter’s pit stop was the most effective and he soon found himself alone at the front in the first sector on the second lap. Parker and Stoot weren’t that far back, but Liu was struggling mightily to get his tires up to temperature. He soon found himself gradually falling farther and farther behind as the rest of the field swallowed him up.

The field spreads out early on lap 2

While Pieter led and Parker tried to catch him, the battle for 3rd place really started to heat up. First, Stoot bumped into Magnus leaving debris on the track at the exit of Turn 3. Then he did it again leaving debris on the racing line in Turn 4. Felix was ultimately the driver to get punished for all of this. Battling his teammate for 5th place just behind them, he was unable to avoid the debris, snapping a suspension and ending his race.

Felix crashes out on debris

With Liu fading badly and Felix out of the picture, Ramen and Orzo were on the move to start tracking down Max and salvaging some points out of what had been a difficult race. Up front, Parker suddenly found himself surrounded by orange and red. He wasn’t able to hit turn 5 with speed, and now he wasn’t just chasing Pieter for the lead, but looking at Stoot and Magnus very large in his mirrors.

Stoot, who had hit turn 5 perfectly, flew down the straight with such speed that he caught up with Pieter at the front. The Scandinavian Blitz drivers suddenly looking at taillights. Magnus got the better pace and was able to keep them in his sights heading into the third sector.

Regency Motors run 1-2

While the four cars at the front battled through Turn 7, the rest of the field began to throw caution to the wind and charge forward. The field was divided into two 4-car packs and there really was very little between the four cars in each group. Everything was to play for up front, and the back four had an equal challenge of, if not catching the top 4, at least making the most of their position behind.

To start with the front four, it was Parker, whose back straight speed had left him wanting. He would need a perfect run through the third sector and a mistake from the top 3 to score a podium. Meanwhile, Stoot had been so gentle on his tires in lap 1 but the complete opposite on lap 2.

Stoot leads in the penultimate corner

Stoot was out front for most of the third sector, but his tires left him having to fight his car through most of it. Pieter and Magnus, on the other hand, were driving slow and smooth and fast. Stoot rounded the final corner in the lead but with no momentum. Pieter and Magnus flew down the pit straight and across the finish line well ahead of him. Parker wasn’t quite close enough to catch up, but he made it quite close and a much better result than what he accomplished in Portland.

While all of this was happening, the trailing pack was having their own trials and tribulations with the final sector. Max and Orzo took a small advantage over Ramen and Liu. Orzo didn’t quite hit the final two turns right, allowing Max to take 5th place. Liu was even worse off. Last among the cars still running, he pushed it just a bit too far at Turn 9 and spun his car. Ramen flew by him and soon found himself in a drag race with his teammate. It was a race he would win as he edged Orzo by a nose at the finish line. Liu would limp home behind them.

Pieter’s win makes him the first driver in SBMRL history to win the first two races of the season. In fact, he’s the only race one winner to even podium in the second race. Unlike Portland, Pieter made his move early in the race, took command in the middle, then fought off his challengers late to take the win.

Magnus had a bit of an unexpected 2nd place to match his first result. Previously, only Sheila Dinkum had finished 2nd in the first two races. He spent most of the race in the middle, but moved up to podium contention midway into the second lap. Stoot will regret missing out on the win after being ahead so late, but he should be quite happy with the final result.

Only 4 drivers held a lead at any point in the race. Three of them finished in the top four, and the other was Liu, who just had a miserable second lap to finish 8th. At least he finished, though. Felix and Mai were the first two casualties of the season, seeing their races end prematurely.

The top 3 in the drivers standings repeating their exact finishing order is unprecendented, and leaves the rest of the field with some catching up to do. Perhaps surprisingly, Ramen is in 4th place after the first two races. His 5th and 6th place finishes are enough to edge out Liu, who was 4th place in Portland. Orzo and Mai are in 9th and 10th place, neither having yet reached 10 total points on the season.

From a team standpoint, Regency Motors and Scandinavian Blitz both had races to be very happy with. Mac ‘N Speed edged out Switch Motorsports by a couple of points. Fir Splays will be looking for quite a bit more next time out. Their measly 5 points for the race puts them in last place in the team standings, albeit not far behind the two teams in front of them.
